That’s DOCTOR Drakken!

Now, it all happened on a Tuesday about fifteen years or so ago. I was still what one would call a low-tier villain, mostly conducting experiments and trying to come up with the funds I’d need for buy myself a proper lair and all the doodads and gadgets utilized by proper villains. Anyhoo, I was conducting one of those experiments when I had a slight accident, and the rest, as they say, is history.

You said you're not comfortable with the word sexy, so instead I'm going to ask what you find most attractive about Shego, physically speaking.

Hello there and welcome, dear followers, to another installment of me explaining my views on Drakken and exactly why I view him the way I do. Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m not posting my next list of episodes, which I will admit, is severely behind schedule. Don’t worry though, as I am working on it. It will probably be a little while longer before I post the second one, but I assure you, it will happen.

In the meantime I want to bring up something I see very often, and keep in mind that these are just my own personal opinions. The issue I want to talk about is that there seem to be a lot of misconceptions about Drakken. These are just general things that most fans of the show seem to believe, even if they have no real basis in the show, or go against what has been established by canon. So without further ado, let’s jump straight into it.

Drakken Misconception 1: Drakken is less competent than Shego/other villains on the show

The biggest argument used by the people in the fandom who think this is that Drakken always loses. Don’t get me wrong, he does. Professor Dementor especially likes to point this out. However, none of the other villains have a better track record, including Shego. In fact, whenever Shego functions as the main villain in an episode, not only is she foiled by Kim just as easily as Drakken is, but she’s often foiled while doing much more ‘small-time’ villainy than her boss. Let’s use a couple of Shego-centric episodes as examples. In “Adventures In Rufus-Sitting” Shego, Duff Killigan and Monkey Fist are all thwarted by Kim while trying to steal a microchip used for talking greeting cards. In “Two To Tutor” Kim captures Shego and her student, Señor Senior Junior, preventing them from stealing a very valuable cookie recipe. Any other time she has teamed up with other villains she has also been foiled, so how is she more competent? Because she has attitude and knows how to fight?

It’s true that she is more genre-savvy than Drakken, but that doesn’t actually help her. The thing is, Drakken and Shego are two different breeds of villains and that’s why they work together so well. They fulfill each other in a way, which I will get back to in a later installment regarding Drakken’s relationships. Drakken is the ‘classic’ villain, who adheres to the villain code of ranting and gloating to his enemies, something he gets a lot of enjoyment from. Yes, he puts Kim in traps which she manages to escape from, rather than just finishing her off, but it’s not because he’s stupid or incompetent. It’s because to him that’s what being a villain is. Even Drakken’s biggest critic, Dementor, does the same, and it has cost him as well. Now, Drakken does still want to win, however, so he does make some progress towards becoming more genre-savvy, an example appearing in “Rappin’ Drakken” where he’s stopped using countdowns, but I digress.

Shego, on the other hand is, like I said, more genre-savvy. She fully realizes that all the gloating and ranting and ‘classic’ villain behaviour comes at the price of losing, so she sticks to a more streetwise type of villainy. She plays it fairly safe when it comes to plans instead of thinking up over the top, complicated schemes , and she doesn’t gloat about her plans. She’s good at stealing things, so that’s where her strength lies, and she knows it. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to help her much in the long run, as Kim is always able to stop her as well.

I also want to talk about Dementor since he does take enjoyment in pointing out Drakken’s failures, but then I would have to get into their rivalry, and, once again, that’s better suited for the relationships installment.

In the end Drakken comes out just as well as the rest of the show’s villains. They all lose, so if Drakken is incompetent, then that means all the rest are as well. Remember, being more genre-savvy, doesn’t automatically mean someone is more competent.

Drakken Misconception 2: Drakken is less evil/dangerous than Shego

This also comes down to the fact that they’re two different types of villains. Let’s go over danger first, since that’s really the more straight forward one to explain. Physically speaking, Shego is more dangerous, yes, because she is the one who fights Kim. That’s not to say Drakken can’t be dangerous as well, but whenever he puts Kim herself in physical danger it’s through some sort of trap or scheme rather than Shego’s much more direct approach of just outright tearing into Kim with marital arts.

Drakken makes up for not being a physically dangerous challenge to Kim, however, by being more dangerous on a global scale. Unlike Shego, who is quite content with just creating chaos locally, Drakken frequently endangers the entire world with his schemes and doomsday devices, and if it’s not the entire world it’s countries, like Canada, US states like Wisconsin, or major capitals like Paris. Yes, Shego is the more immediate threat, because Kim has to deal with her in order to stop Drakken, but, as I’ve stated before, stopping Drakken is why she is even fighting Shego in the first place, unless Shego is on her own or working with someone else.

Does this mean I think Drakken is more dangerous than Shego over all? No. It simply means they’re dangerous in very different ways. Shego is more of the immediate ‘in your face’ type of dangerous, while Drakken is more big-picture kind of dangerous.

Now, is one of them more evil than the other? Well, let’s look at the facts first. Now, in the episode “Bad Boy” both Drakken and Shego each take their turn on Jack Hench’s “Test Your Badness Level” machine. Drakken tries first, only getting “playground bully”, while Shego manages to reach the very top with her turn. Okay, so that’s pretty straight forward, right? Well there are a couple of factors that need to be considered. First of all, the HenchCo machine is essentially like one of those love meters you might find in a bar…

…And they really only measure your grip and a few other things, like the amount of sweat on your palms. Secondly, Drakken has already been stated to be evil on multiple occasions, throughout the four seasons. Kim even asks “How much more evil can Drakken get?” in the very same episode. Shego herself assures Drakken of his evil nature in “So The Drama”, and in the finale of the Team Possible World Showcase Adventure she gives him “One hundred points for evil sense. Zero points for fashion sense.”

It seems a lot of people think that the fact that Drakken is a ‘nice’ guy, means he is less evil, but there’s a difference between being nice and being good, as there is a difference between being bad and being evil. Drakken is nice, yes, in that he cares about certain people and has a lot of interests you wouldn’t usually associate with a villain. He often shows consideration, even doing so towards Kim and her family in “A very Possible Christmas”, but don’t be mistaken. He is evil. Over the course of the series, he’s plotted to remove all the breathable air in the world, pollute the Ozone layer, create a new ice age, cover the state of Wisconsin and all its inhabitants in magma, and he’s caused a world-wide earthquake. And let’s not forget this:

And he does all this while grinning evilly, obviously taking pride and pleasure in the acts of evil he’s committing.

So who is the more evil one? I’d put them at about the same. Neither is more evil than the other, they’re just different kinds of evil. Drakken is the ‘take over the world’ type of evil with little consideration for the people affected by his often destructive plots, while Shego is more ‘I do what I want’ evil who just enjoys doing what she does best.

Drakken Misconception 3: People don’t respect Drakken or find him intimidating

This one is understandable, since we, the viewers, get to see Drakken in many types of situations, which are often silly. Take the shampoo commercial he made in “Rappin’ Drakken”, for example, where we see him gingerly skipping through a field of flowers. We see him get punished by Mr. Sit-Down and get a complete, and rather ridiculous makeover in “Dimension Twist”. Then there’s the time he gets electrocuted while trying to hook up the Genomic Sequencer in “Partners”. Situations like that, coupled with the sass he gets from Kim, Shego and Dementor, not to mention his mother constantly undermining his villainous nature and embarrassing hime whenever she’s around, seems to have people thinking he doesn’t get respect from anyone, and that most people find him childish and pathetic.

However, this is not the case. Most characters outside of Kim and her family treat Drakken with a decent amount of respect, even after being around him a while. Sure, there are characters like Jilly from Jersey who give him grief, but then there are characters like Wacky Wally from “Job Unfair” and Doctor Freeman from “Car Trouble”. There’s Jimmy Ding, who tries buying him off in “Ron Millionaire” and the host and main judge on “American Starmaker” in the episode “Rappin’ Drakken”.

Then you have times where he is perceived as intimidating or scary by characters, such as Monique, who is startled enough by him in “A Sitch in Time” to scream, Ron who finds him intimidating enough to back away from in more than one episode, including “Mother’s Day”, James Possible, who becomes visibly uneasy when Drakken tells him he’ll be placed in the Brain Tap in “So The Drama” ,and Kim herself finds him threatening at times, a good example being in the banner at the top of the page, which has been taken from “Bueno Nacho”. Even Shego is scared by Drakken once he exhibits the cold, calm fury, which is quite unlike him, in “Mind Games”:

Drakken Misconception 4: Drakken is a lot like Ron

It’s true that they share some similar interests, and that they both provide a lot of the show’s humour, but apart from that they don’t really have much in common. Ron is an immature, lovable, clumsy, procrastinating goofball who enjoys video games and fast food. Sometimes he has to try and fail in order to achieve something, while other times he gets by on pure luck. He always manages to land on his feet, even though he usually just goes with the flow or somehow manages to embarrass himself. Ron also gives us most of the show’s physical gags, through losing his pants, breaking something or giving off a girlish scream when he’s frightened. He’s not meant to be the coolest or the smartest or the most skilled, but the fact that he manages to overcome his problems in his own goofy manner is what makes him a great character.

Drakken, on the other hand, is a diligent schemer, who comes up with diabolical, but over-complicated plans. He is grouchy, easily stirred and plagued with bad luck. When he has problems he is determined to overcome them, but unlike Ron it never really works out for him. While very much petulant, Drakken isn’t immature like Ron is either. Sure, he enjoys Snowman Hank, but on the other hand he clearly dislikes Christmas as a whole, while for Ron it’s one of the best times of the year. The humour Drakken brings to the show is different as well. Unlike Ron, who is much more of a slapstick character, Drakken makes you laugh with his bizarre and eccentric ways, his temper tantrums, how easy it is to get under his skin, his complaints and rants and how well he works as a straight man to Shego’s mocking and sarcasm. Then there’s the fact that Drakken is the leader of his duo, while Ron is the sidekick of his.

The characters of Ron and Drakken are often said to be visually similar as well, something I have a bit of a hard time seeing. Yes, they both have big ears, but whereas Ron has a ‘normal’ sized chin, Drakken’s is bigger. They both have round-ish heads, but Drakken has his cheekbones and the flatness of the back of his head. Ron has large feet and hands, while Drakken’s hands and feet are small. Drakken has broad shoulders and a broad chest with thick arms and a narrow waist. Ron, meanwhile, is more pear-shaped. He has slender arms and slender shoulders, and a little bit of a tummy. He’s not fat, but he looks like someone who, while active, eats a lot of junk food and spends a lot of time in front of the TV. Actually, he kind of resembles Goofy a little in body shape, which isn’t surprising seeing as it’s a character design meant to promote the sort of goofy qualities that makes up Ron’s character.

She’s completely capable of getting her own food at the henchmen’s cafeteria, though she does prefer eating away from them, which I completely understand.

We do eat dinner together a fair amount of times during the week, but not all the time or anything.

Those dishes you mentioned sound good, but what about more 'homely' ones? Mac and cheese? Meatloaf? Tuna helpers?

Oh I suppose I am what you might call a food-lover. I enjoy all sorts of dishes, be it ribs barbecued country style accompanied with baked potatoes, a simple turkey sandwich, a cheeseburger bought at some fast food joint, Chinese take-out or a homemade pizza with a sundried tomato sauce, parma ham and mozzarella cheese. And let’s not forget my mother’s potato salad. Delish.

I’ll try just about anything once, from calamari to possum stew. From venison to trout and perch cooked over an open fire. From kebabs to salads.

I will say I have a bit of a sweet tooth though, especially when it comes to anything that involves chocolate.

So what are you going to do for food on yours and Shego's movie marathon day?

Aaaaaahhh, I’m glad you ask, whoever you are. You know, I wasn’t quite sure at first. I mean, I assume we’ll be snacking while watching the movies, so I wanted to make the meals fairly light.

Having said that, I plan on letting Shego sleep in, it being planned as a sort of casual day for relaxation and all. Now, I don’t know how she’d feel about breakfast in bed, so I’ll have to check with her on that, but knowing her I’m planning on it being French style. A light meal consisting of a single croissant, some jam, lots of different types of sliced fruits and coffee.

For lunch I’m thinking a small helping of pasta with crayfish and fresh herbs for each of us. Once again, nothing too heavy. It should still taste and look amazing though. One of the reasons I love Italian dishes is that you get so much taste and color from something very simple, with just a few ingredients.

Now dinner will have to be something more solid, but that doesn’t mean It has to be something overwhelming that fills you completely up for the rest of the day. Here I’ve decided to go for a nice, grilled porterhouse steak marinated in just a little bit of neutral oil with some oregano, thyme, lemon balm and a couple of bay leaves. After letting the meat breathe for a little while, I then plan on cutting it into finely sliced… well, slices. I also plan on frying up some chanterelle mushrooms in what’s left over of the marinade and serve it alongside the steak with some creamy potatoes au gratin.

And yes, I know it sounds like a lot of work, but this is actually a fairly simple, homemade dish that doesn’t take a lot of time to make. And it’s a perfect way to thank Shego for spending the day chilling with me when she could be out doing whatever she usually does on Valentine’s.
